Richmonders will soon get another taste of celebrity hype this summer during the filming of Killing Kennedy, a movie starring Rob Lowe that depicts the life and loss of President John F. Kennedy.

The National Geographic Channel announced earlier this week that the movie will be produced in Richmond starting June 10th by Scott Free Productions. The film isbased on the book by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard that depicts the events leading up to the assassination of the 35th president. The film will premiere later this year in the U.S and in 171 countries in honor of the 50th anniversary of the assassination.

The film tracks the lives of both JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald beginning in 1959 and portrays the events that shaped both men in the years leading up to November 22, 1963.

Lowe is set to star as JFK in the movie alongside actresses Ginnifer Goodwin and Michelle Trachtenberg, who will play First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Marina Oswald, respectively.

Lowe starred in NBC’s The West Wing from 1999 to 2003, earning him an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama series. He also, more recently, appeared in NBC’s Parks and Recreation and Showtime’s Californiacation. The National Geographic Channel asked Lowe to narrate the network series The 80’s: The Decade That Made Us, earlier this year.

Lowe said he was “very excited to play this great American,” via Twitter on Wednesday:
